Greetings fellow Horseshoe Crab Monitoring folks, Just a quick reminder, our first Horseshoe Crab monitoring and tagging date for 2010 is set for this FRIDAY evening (May 14th) at 8:30pm. The event is rain or shine! We should be done no later than 9:30pm. Please be on time and check in with your beach captain (see below). That person will review how to monitor and tag Horseshoe Crab s and give you some guidelines. Please make sure to bring a cordless drill if you have one and on a 5/32" drill bit tape up 1/8" from the tip to tag the crabs. Also, we will need measuring tape, rulers, and pens/pencils. Also, bring two clipboards, one for counting crabs and the other for tagging. Moreover, make sure to wear the appropriate clothes for the weather. Make sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp. Headlamps are preferred because they free up both hands. Work gloves may be useful to hold crabs. Also, please wear shoes – No bare feet! We recommend water-shoes, old sneakers, or boots. One final note. Please do not be discouraged or put off if all we see are a few crabs on Friday night. It is still early in the season, and the height of Horseshoe Crab spawning does not really begin until towards the end of May and early June. Friday will be a good time to practice e our monitoring and tagging skills before the height of the spawning season. I look forward to a fun and productive crab monitoring event this Friday evening. Below is a list of site locations and beach captains. Any questions, please let me know.
