Reminder: Horseshoe Crab Monitoring this Tuesday, May 17 at 8:30pm!

Greetings fellow Horseshoe Crab Monitoring folks,

Just a quick reminder, our second HSC monitoring and tagging date is set for this Tuesday evening, May 17 at 8:30pm.  The event is rain or shine! We should be done no later than 9:30pm.

Please be on time and check in with your beach captain. We will need at least 5 volunteers per site to help count and tag Horseshoe Crabs. Please make sure to bring a cordless drill. Tape a 5/32” drill bit up 1/8" from the tip to tag the crabs. Also, we will need measuring tape and rulers. Make sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp.

The weather forecast right now calls for occasional showers. A chance of thunderstorms in the evening. Lows around 60. East winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 80 percent. Expect to be out in the rain so please dress for the weather. Work gloves may be useful to hold crabs. Also, please wear shoes – No bare feet!  We recommend water-shoes, old sneakers, or boots.

I look forward to a fun and productive crab monitoring event this Tuesday evening. Water temperatures have reached 60 degrees for much of Sandy Hook Bay and Raritan Bay. I have also seen or heard a great deal of HSC activity in the last week. Expect a greater amount of counting & tagging this time around.

Below is a list of locations and beach captains.

Thanks & fair winds,
Joe Reynolds
