Greetings fellow Raritan Bay-Sandy Hook Bay Horseshoe Crab Monitors, While I am still waiting for permission to “officially” monitor Plum Island at Sandy Hook NRA, I wanted to remind everyone of upcoming important dates in April, May & June. Training will take place on Friday, April 24th, at 7:30pm, Bayshore Waterfront Park (Spy House) located within the Port Monmouth section of Middletown Township. We will train how to monitor horseshoe crabs and tag the crabs as well. We will need measuring tape & cordless drills to bore a small hole in the crab’s shell to put in the tag. So, if you can, please bring a cordless drill and a bit that can make a 5/32” hole. It is important that you try to make training, as we will decide the sites where volunteers will be located and the times/places to meet up to monitor. The dates that will monitor include: Saturday, May 9th around 8pm Sunday, May 24th around 7pm Sunday, June 7th around 7pm If we need to, we can also monitor on Monday, June 22nd, around 7pm. High tides occur around 8am and 8pm on all four (4) days. So, it will be up to the group to decide if they want to meet up during sun rise or sun set. I have set up a Google Map of our site locations. Each site lists the dates to monitor. I hope to add more information as time proceeds. In the meantime, check out the map and let me know what you think. You can view it at the Bayshore Watershed site or directly at Google Maps. http://www.bayshorewatershed.org/bw/Current%20Projects/%2A%20Horseshoe%20Crab%20Education/ Moreover, for further information on how we will proceed with monitoring activities, please review the following website from the University of Delaware, Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service. We will follow similar scientific procedures. http://www.ocean.udel.edu/mas/bhall/hsccensus/index.html Thanks for your help & time, and I look forward to seeing everyone for training on Friday, April 24th, 7:30pm at the Bayshore Waterfront Park. Fair winds, Joe Reynolds
