Who We Are HAQLA Our Watershed Current Projects Insiders Guide
Volunteers needed in 2009

Greetings fellow Bayshore Watershed folks,

As discussed during our previous watershed meeting on December 11th, it looks like we have an opportunity to volunteer with the U.S Fish and Wildlife Service in 2009 to monitor and tag Horseshoe Crabs in the Monmouth County section on Sandy Hook Bay-Raritan Bay beaches.

If you are interested in being a volunteer this spring (May/June) to monitor Horseshoe Crabs, please let me know as soon as possible. I need to submit the application by the end of the year. I will need your name, address & phone number.

Instead of everyone submitting their own individual application, it seems that I am able to include other volunteer contact information within one application. This is good news.

The goal of this project is to help determine the migration patterns, abundance, and survival rates of the Horseshoe Crab population in Sandy Hook Bay & Raritan Bay, Monmouth County, NJ.

Please keep in mind that the volunteer process will include spending several nights along a bay beach counting and tagging Horseshoe Crabs in May and/or June. So, you will need to make a commitment to spend time to be trained and then spend some time at night actually counting and tagging the critters.

I am unsure of exact nights or locations at this time of when & where we will be monitoring/tagging Horseshoe Crabs in May & June.  Some possible locations include: Plum Island at Sandy Hook, the mouth of Many Mind Creek in Atlantic Highlands, Leonardo Beach, the mouth of Pews Creek in Port Monmouth, Conaskonk Point in Union Beach, and the mouth of Whale Creek in Cliffwood Beach. More information will follow as we get closer to the Horseshoe Crab mating season.

This is a wonderful opportunity, and I encourage you to volunteer if you are able and so desire. Please let me know if you are interested. Again, I will need your name, address, and phone number if you wish to volunteer this spring.

At a minimum, I would like about 6 or 7 people to volunteer. More would be nice!

Thanks & fair winds,

Joe Reynolds
