Project Title: Northern Bayshore Regional Dredged Material Management Plan for Raritan and Sandy Hook Bays
Client: Hazlet Area Quality of Life Alliance
Bayshore Regional Watershed Council
Contact: Steve Taylor
Summary of Progress To-Date:
The Hazlet Area Quality of Life Alliance, Bayshore Regional Watershed Council, Clean Ocean Action, NJ Marine Trades, NJDEP and Monmouth University’s Urban Coast Institute held a second community meeting December 13th at 7:30 pm at the Henry Hudson Activity Center in Middletown. An editorial (attached) announcing the meeting appeared in the Asbury Park Press on December 7th. The meeting served as a working session where participants were briefed on the status of the development of the dredged material management plan and asked to provide input on the draft plan. Participants were specifically asked to provide their thoughts on the feasibility of beneficial use options at various sites along the Bayshore, identify potential relay/storage locations in the study area, and identify opportunities to work with others such as construction firms, municipalities and marinas. Participation at the forum was excellent with more than 35 participants in attendance in spite of a snowstorm that evening. Information about the forum as well as the DMMP can be found on the BRWC website (bayshorewatershed.org).
Potential Beneficial Use Facilities discussed included Cliffwood Beach in Aberdeen, Keansburg beach, Aeromarine in Keyport, Belford Landfill, and Leonardo Marina. These sites were discussed primarily as a potential staging area where material could be processed for a beneficial use. Bayshore Recycling Corporation services were also discussed as it related to their exploration of authorization to use dredged material as asphalt aggregate.
Development of the Bayshore Regional DMMP continues to progress. Exploration of viable beneficial use options at each identified location is being examined. Potential partners continue to step forward and discuss options that may work for them. A draft DMMP is being discussed among the partners with the intent of releasing it for public review and comment in the coming months. Local construction firms are being identified and contacted to discuss dredged material use options on local construction sites. Communications with a few of the local construction contractors have been positive and interest in dredged material has been expressed.
Slippage Report: The program is on schedule.
Problems Encountered: No problems encountered at this time.
Planned Activities for Next Reporting Period: Next steps include additional research, community meetings, and refinement of the draft DMMP.
