For the third time in two months, hundreds of dead menhaden fish have been sighted in the Bayshore area. About six weeks ago, the state Department of Environmental Protection had the water tested after hundreds of menhaden were found dead in the water near the piers in Keyport and in the Belford section of Middletown.

There was a scare [Thursday Morning] because the bay water between Avenue A and the Hesse dirt pier was black, some fearing it was an oil spill.

Town police, the AH Fire Marshall and yours truly checked it out.

It was the usual summer aquatic vegetation kill that we have seen other

years, sometimes in the creeks, sometimes in the bay.

The state talks a lot about coastal stewardship, but now is a good time to ask if they are doing anything to advance the standard of our water quality in Raritan Bay and Sandy Hook Bay. I will promise you this, the transfer of knowledge and information from the state to the general public in a way they can understand is very important in creating a clear plan for restoring and protecting our bay waters. Without this transfer of knowledge, our bay waters will never improve.

It was disgusting brown algal scum that we observed! A massive algae bloom struck Sandy Hook Bay over the Memorial Day weekend to darken the waters.
