February 27, 2009 - A humpback whale that became entangled in fishing gear is free again. A three-member rescue crew on Thursday cut fishing line and other gear that had snagged the 25- to 30-foot whale, entangling it since Wednesday about eight miles off Sandy Hook, New Jersey. "It had curvature on its back from the weight of the gear pulling down on it, but the primary entanglement was the line wrapped around its tail, which caused a gash," said Teri Frady, a spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. | ||||||||
