Recently a local bank offered to plant a tree for each new customer who switched to their on-line bill pay service.

That's commendable; paying bills online makes sense and is convenient.  Trees are a positive addition to the environment that will benefit generations to come.

But I must wonder...how many trees have already  been sacrificed (or scheduled for destruction) to the god of sprawl  (i.e. building more banks, condos and shopping centers)?  It does not take rocket science to observe

that the temperature on an asphalt parking lot will be 20 degrees hotter than the reading under the shade of an old Sycamore tree.

I'm not against progress, commerce and conservative development.  What makes me sad ~ and angry ~ is seeing beautiful "seasoned" trees hacked and butchered mindlessly.   Every week the roar of chainsaws and bulldozers can be heard in the village of Belford.

It's enough to send a chill down my spine, even on the warmest summer day!
