A heavy bloom of algae is affecting waters and beaches in Raritan and Sandy Hook bays today, and "patches of heavy algae were also observed in the surf to approximately 300 yards offshore from Sandy Hook south to Manasquan Inlet," a state Web site said.

Water samples collected yesterday at all ocean and bay monitoring stations showed that water quality exceeded the standard for fecal bacteria at one bay beach in Monmouth County and several bay beaches and an ocean beach in Ocean County, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection Web site.

More samples were collected today and results will be available tomorrow. Beaches are not yet open on weekdays, the Web site said.
